Chalmers Vermentino Zero is a low-alcohol/near-alcohol-free wine made from Vermentino grapes grown in Heathcote, Victoria, Australia. It’s part of Chalmers’ wine range and is produced using traditional winemaking methods before undergoing a dealcoholisation process, resulting in a beverage with less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (legally considered “non-alcoholic” in many markets but still labelled with a tiny residual amount).
Grape & Origin
Variety: Vermentino — a Mediterranean white grape originally from Italy, known for its aromatic, citrus-driven profile and natural acidity.
Vineyard: Estate grown in Heathcote on red Cambrian soils at ~150–170 m elevation — a site Chalmers has planted since the early 2000s.
The winery chose Vermentino as the base for its first non-alcoholic wine because the variety holds vibrant flavour and refreshing acidity even when alcohol is removed and has long been a standout in their portfolio.
Production Process
Grapes are hand-picked and wild fermented in stainless steel tanks, similar to their regular Vermentino wines.
The dealcoholisation is done deliberately and purposefully to preserve as much varietal character as possible — meaning it’s not simply a flavour-added beverage, but based on real fermented wine that has had alcohol gently removed.
Fermentation is typically stopped before reaching complete dryness so that natural sugars and flavour compounds remain, enhancing mouthfeel and vermentino character even after alcohol removal.
🧪 Style & Tasting Profile
According to tasting notes provided by Chalmers and retailers:
Aroma & Flavour: Bright and juicy with lemon balm, flint, mandarin, and white peach tones — a fresh and aromatic mix that still reflects Vermentino’s Mediterranean lineage.
Texture: Crisp and clean, with a limestone or mineral finish.
Designed to be light, refreshing and drinkable chilled, much like a classic dry white wine but without the alcohol effect.
Food Pairing
Chalmers suggests pairing Vermentino Zero with light or fresh dishes such as:
Cucumber salad with labneh 🍽️
Poached chicken with fresh dill 🍽️These are similar to pairings you’d expect with a classic dry white — bright, subtle herb flavours and fresh seafood or salads — which work well thanks to the wine’s acidity and citrus character.
