Beyond The Glass “Maggie” Syrah 2023
Beyond The Glass “Maggie” Syrah is a small-batch Victorian red from Heathcote, made in a lighter, more Rhône-inspired style than the big, jammy Australian Shiraz many people expect.
A few key things about it:
Region: Heathcote, Victoria — specifically fruit from the cooler southern end of the region on Taungurung Country.
Grape: Syrah/Shiraz (same grape, different stylistic framing).
Style: Medium-bodied, spicy, savoury, and fresh rather than ultra-heavy. Beyond The Glass intentionally uses “Syrah” to signal a more old-world, Rhône-style expression.
Winemaking: Wild-leaning minimal intervention approach, about two weeks on skins, then maturation in large 500L French oak barrels for around seven months.
Producer philosophy: The winery focuses on sustainable Victorian fruit, approachable natural-leaning wines, and a relaxed, dog-themed branding aesthetic.
What's the best way to describe this wine?
“Strong in body, large in flavour… master of spice.”
In the glass, you’d generally expect:
Blackberry and dark cherry fruit
Pepper and baking spice
Floral lift
Earthy/savoury notes
Medium tannins with good freshness
Compared with a classic Barossa Shiraz, Maggie is likely:
less oaky,
less sweet-fruited,
more peppery and lifted,
and easier to drink slightly cool.
Food-wise it should work really well with:
lamb,
chargrilled meats,
mushroom dishes,
smoky barbecue,
or hard cheeses. Vivino users also commonly pair it with beef, lamb, and game
From the south of the region where the climate is slightly cooler. It had two weeks on skins with daily pumpovers. It was then pressed to large format (500L) french oak barrels for a seven month rest. Named in honour of Maggie. The undisputed leader of the pack.
After a corporate job in London fell through, Cron was invited to attend harvest in the South of France. It was at a wine tasting event in Le Barroux with local winemakers where a life-changing wine was poured into his glass, it rocked him. That moment and that wine sparked what would become Beyond the Glass.
Cron makes the wine in Bacchus Marsh but their growers are in Geelong, Heathcote and Pyreness - amongst others.
